Creative Writing
It is critical for this population – far too acquainted with weaponry – to learn the power of the pen, that the words and ideas which flow from one person can influence the thoughts of many and reveal the innermost riches of an individual.
“Prisoners have a passion to write, creating works layered with messages and life lessons. They have a lot to say and some very complex emotions to express.
For many of them, poetry is the way they prefer to get these ideas out of their heads and into the world. They are hungry for poetry and are deeply moved when they hear their own experience voiced by a poet who is a total stranger to them. I think it makes them feel they are not alone – like someone else knows them, even if they live in different centuries.”Carie Donnelson and Dawn McDonald, RTA facilitators
Walking the road of independence
Unsure of which way 2 turn
Made a few bad decisions
That were necessary 2 learn
Listen 2 the fire of my words
That’s the power of purpose
I got some talents in the mist
N they’re starting 2 surface
Let the now b tomorrow
Every seconds the future
In front or behind bars
I’m still a R.T.A. Mover!
